Overview
Introduction
Merxian is a European payments platform and merchant of record. You use its API to create payable transactions, send buyers to hosted checkout, and receive the results as webhook events.

What Merxian does#
Merxian collects payments from buyers for your business. It shows the buyer a hosted checkout page, collects the payment, and pays out your balance. On a merchant of record account, Merxian is also the seller to the buyer. It then calculates EU VAT and issues the buyer invoice and credit notes.
Your integration talks to Merxian in two directions:
- Your server calls the Merxian API at
https://api.merxian.comwith a secret API key. - Merxian sends events to a webhook endpoint on your server when something changes, for example when a payment succeeds.
What you can build#
| You want to | Use |
|---|---|
| Sell catalog products on a page that Merxian hosts | A checkout session |
| Share one link that many buyers can pay | A payment link |
| Build the payable record on your server first, then collect it | A transaction and a checkout session |
| Return money to a buyer | A refund |
| Release goods or access when money arrives | Webhook events such as payment.succeeded |
Two business models#
An account uses one of two models. In the payments model, you are the seller. Merxian collects the payment and pays out your balance. In the merchant of record model, Merxian is the seller to the buyer. Merxian then also calculates VAT and issues the buyer invoice. The API calls are the same in both models. Read Merchant of record for the difference in responsibility.
How the documentation is organized#
- Overview and Get started explain the model and take you through a first sandbox payment.
- Core concepts explain each public resource and its lifecycle.
- Technical concepts explain the rules that apply to every request: authentication, errors, idempotency, pagination, and asynchronous results.
- Integration guides give the steps for one goal, such as a refund.
- Webhooks explain how to receive, verify, and process events. The event catalogue lists every event.
- API reference lists every endpoint and field.
- Testing and Go live give the checks before you take live payments.
Learning path#
If you are new to Merxian, read the pages in this order:
- How Merxian works: the resources and how they relate.
- Integration overview: what your systems do and what Merxian does.
- Get an API key and make your first request.
- Create a checkout session and pay it in sandbox.
- Receive the result with a webhook endpoint.
- Test the full flow, including failures.
- Go live.
If you already have an integration, go straight to the reference:
- API referenceEndpoints, fields, and examples.
- Event catalogueEvery event with its payload.
- Error referenceEvery error code and its status.
- QuickstartOne page, one sandbox payment.
